Section 8/HCV Eligibility Info

AM I ELIGIBLE TO GET A VOUCHER? 

Anyone can apply for the HCV program. If the money you and your family members receive in a year (gross wages, benefits, etc.) is no more than the amount allowed by HUD for the number of people in your family you may be eligible.

The income limits for South Portland Housing Authority’s jurisdiction effective 4/18/2022 are:

SPHA has the following preferences: Families with minors or dependents; Elderly families; Disabled families; Residency (live or work in South Portland); Veterans; Victims of a federally declared natural disaster; Chronically Homeless.

In addition to income requirements, you will be required to provide photo identification for all adult household members, proof of legal residence in the United States for all household members, verification of any Social Security number to which household members have been assigned, and verification of all household income and assets.

The Housing Authority will check on the criminal record of all adult family members and will check to see if any member is required to register as a sex offender.  If you or any family members have committed any serious crimes you may not be eligible for the program.  Families with members that are required to register as sex offenders are not eligible for Section 8 assistance.
