Laurie Carr Scholarship Program

South Portland Housing Authority awards up to $2,000 each year in scholarships through the Laurie Carr scholarship program, at the determination of the SPHA board. Applicants must be a resident of a South Portland Housing Authority (SPHA) owned or managed property, or a recipient of an HCV voucher under the jurisdiction of the SPHA. Applicants must also be currently attending or planning to attend a certification, license, or degree earning program.

Submissions include:

  1. Completed application, download:
  2. Verification of acceptance into a certification, license, or degree earning program, or application and acceptance status.
  3. A typed Essay of minimum 250 words – topic is “Why This Training/Education, Why Now?” Applicant may provide a sample of their personal work as an alternate submission in lieu of essay or in addition to a shorter essay. The alternate submission will address the topic.
  4. Two letters of recommendation from non-relatives.
  5. Applicants currently attending a high school, college, or other program will provide a transcript of grades from high school or college they are presently attending. Certificates of completion are also accepted. Transcript not needed for applicants currently participating in any apprenticeship program. If you haven’t attended school in the past five years this does not apply.

Submit your application by mail, postmarked no later than June 17, 2020 or bring to the Authority office located at 100 Waterman Drive, South Portland by June 17, 2020 at 4:00 pm.

MAPHD Scholarship Program
Applications accepted through June 15, 2020

The Maine Association of Public Housing Directors award one $1500 scholarship each year through the MAPHD Scholarship Program. A second scholarship is possible depending on funds available. Applicants must be residents of Public Housing / Section 8 / Low Income / Subsidized Housing. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or currently attending an accredited institution of high education.
